Coastal Scholarships

The Alma and August Mendosa Scholarship Fund

Created by Marilyn Herzog in honor of her aunt and uncle as a memorial to Alma Mendosa's 47-year career as a Mendocino educator, this scholarship is for Mendocino High School seniors who plan to attend four-year colleges or universities.  Awardees are selected for their potential for academic success, their community and/or extracurricular involvement, the recommendation from instructors, community members or employers, and their financial need.  To learn more about the history of this scholarship, click here.

Amount: $4,000 over four years ($1,000/year)

Requirements:  A 2019 Community Foundation online application, a high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation from instructors, community members or employers. *We will also accept a paper Mendocino High school common scholarship application.

Jerry Juhl Fund for the Arts Scholarship Fund

Created by Susan Juhl in honor of her husband, Jerry, this scholarship is for Mendocino, Fort Bragg, and Point Arena High School seniors or graduates who plan to attend four-year colleges or universities to study the performing arts (music, dance, theatre, film, and puppetry) and design (sound, lighting, set, and costume).  Awardees are selected for their potential for career success in the performing arts and their prior academic performance (a minimum 3.0 grade point average is desired but not required). Amount: $2,500

Requirements:  A 2019 Community Foundation online application, including a high school or college transcript, two letters of recommendation from drama/music/film instructors or teachers, a performing arts resume, and a sample of the student’s performing art (2 to 3 minutes) or design, especially if it cannot be presented in an interview. *We will also accept a paper high school common scholarship application.

The Todd Hudson Memorial Basketball Scholarship Fund

Created by Jay and Terri Hudson in the memory of their son, Todd Hudson, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Fort Bragg High School who played for the boys ir girls Varsity basketball team during their senior year and plans to attend an accredited and/or licensed vocational school, community college, or four-year college or university. Awardees are selected who demonstrate perseverance, compassion, and a sense of humor; share their talent and love of sports with younger children; and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.  To learn more about the history of this scholarship, click here.

Amount: $8,000 over four years ($2000/year)

Fionna and Richard Perkins Scholarship Fund

Created by Fionna and Richard Perkins this scholarship is awarded to women on the Mendocino Coast who are re-entering higher education after being in the workforce and are attending Mendocino College. The Perkinses were active in many community projects, including the Coast Community Library which Richard, an architect, designed. In 2000 Fionna was named Poet Laureate of Point Arena.  Awardees are selected for their interest in studying the arts, career and technical certificate program or an undergraduate degree discipline.  To learn more about the inspiration behind this scholarship, click here.
