Willits Scholarships

Dr. Charles O. and Harriett C. Smith Memorial Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Fund

Created by "Doc" Smith's daughters, Melanie, Tara, and Jennifer, to honor their parents who encouraged them to compete and to excel, this scholarship is for Willits High School seniors who plan to attend four-year colleges or universities.  Awardees are selected for their prior academic performance (a minimum 3.0 grade point average is required); their community and extracurricular involvement, most notably in team sports; and their solid work ethic and ability to manage multiple activities and time pressures. Amount: $500

Requirements:  A paper Willits High School common scholarship application, a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from instructors, coaches, and/or employer. *We will also accept a paper Willits High school common scholarship application.

Randy Clark Memorial Vocational Scholarship Fund

Created in memory of Randy Clark, who died February 16, 2002 at the age of 21, this scholarship is for Willits High School seniors and graduates who plan to pursue vocational education at trade schools or community colleges.  Awardees are selected for their membership in Future Farmers of America or 4H Club (of at least one year), their potential for career success, and their financial need.  To learn more about Randy Clark, click here.

Amount: Up to $1,000

Requirements:  A paper Willits High School common scholarship application, a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from instructors, coaches and/or employer. *We will also accept a paper Willits High school common scholarship application.

The John Haschak Public Service Scholarship Fund

Created by John Haschak, the current 3rd District Supervisor, to provide multi-year scholarships for Mendocino County Supervisorial District III (Covelo, Willits and Laytonville) high school seniors who attend vocational school, community college, or four-year college or university full-time in the United States. Priority will be given to students who desire to pursue careers in public service (e.g. education, law enforcement, local government, public health, social work, firefighting, Peace Corps./AmeriCorps, etc.) and demonstrate an interest in and passion for community service while in high school.  A GPA of 3.0 or better is preferred. 

Amount: $4,000 over four years ($1,000/year)

*One scholarship will be awarded in each area (Covelo, Willits, and Laytonville)

Requirements: A 2019 Community Foundation online application, including a high school or college transcript, two letters of recommendation.  *We will also accept a Willits High school common scholarship application.

Penserra  Founder's  Scholarship  

Created by George Madrigal and Penserra LLC, this scholarship is for Willits High School seniors who are first, second or third generation (minimum one parent or one grandparent) immigrants and intend to pursue a course of study at an accredited two or four-year college or university.  Priority will be given to individuals who have a 3.0 GPA or higher, have financial need and have demonstrated, through sports, community work, or their employment history, ambition and a willingness to work hard in and out of school. To learn more about George Madrigal and the Penserra Founder's Scholarship, click here.

Amount: $2500 payable over two years ($1250 a year)

Requirements: A 2019 Community Foundation online application, including a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from instructors, coaches and/or employer. *We will also accept a paper Willits High school common scholarship application.

McCarthy and Whitcomb Inland Performing Arts Scholarship Fund

Created by John Whitcomb and Dennis McCarthy, this scholarship is for a high school graduate from Anderson Valley, Ukiah area, Willits, Leggett, Laytonville, or Round Valley who is serious about pursuing a career in the performing arts, including music, theatre, dance, film, puppetry, and related fields at an accredited vocational school, community college or four year university.  Awardees are selected for their talent, drive and determination to pursue a career in the performing arts, and financial need.  A 3.0 GPA or better is preferred. Requirements: A 2019 Community Foundation online application, including a high school or college transcript, two letters of recommendation from drama/music/film instructors or teachers, a performing arts resume, and a sample of the student’s performing art (2 to 3 minutes) or design, especially if it cannot be presented in an interview. *We will also accept a paper Willits High school common scholarship application.

MCHC Health Centers: Linnea Hunter Scholarship Fund

Created in 2017 to honor the organization’s founder Linnea Hunter, this scholarship will support the education of the children and legal dependents of active Mendocino Community Health Clinic, Inc. employees* by providing annual scholarships for graduating seniors and graduates (18-26 years of age) to attend accredited vocational schools, community colleges, or four-year colleges or universities within the United States. Priority will be given to individuals with financial need who demonstrate a history of giving back to their school, community and/or family; exhibit a commitment to public service and/or helping others; and show initiative, altruism and the desire to make the world a better place. Requirements: A 2019 Community Foundation online application, including a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, and/or employers. *We will also accept your paper high school common scholarship application.

Requirements for high school graduates: A Community Foundation online application, resume and two letters of recommendation.

Exclusion: Children of employees who are eligible for the MCHC Health Centers tuition reimbursement program may not simultaneously apply for this scholarship program.
*Those with at least one year of continuous service as of the date of application and who are still employed at the time the scholarship is awarded.
